Paris: Useful Information
For participants attending an international conference, here are some recommandations to keep in mind:
- Transportation: The Paris public transport system consists of the metro (subway), Tram, RER suburban express train (which connects to the metro inside Paris), and bus. Zones 1 and 2 cover the city center and all metro lines. For stays longer than a day it is recommended to purchase a Navigo card.
- Visa and Entry: Since France is part of the Schengen Area, only non-EU-citizens will need to apply for a short-stay visa. For more details, please refer to the Requirements for Attending a Conference in Paris section.
- Accomodations: Here are some hotels you can check for disponibilities:
- Académie Hôtel Saint Germain : 32 rue des Saints Pères, 7e arr., 75007 Paris, France
- Hotel d'Angleterre : 44 Rue Jacob, 6e arr., 75006 Paris, France
- Hotel Bel Ami :7-11 Rue Saint Benoit, 6e arr., 75006 Paris, France
- Crystal Hotel : 24 Rue Saint Benoit, 6e arr., 75006 Paris, France
- Au Manoir Saint Germain : 153 Boulevard Saint Germain, 6e arr., 75006 Paris, France
- Air travel: Paris has two airports, Roissy Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to the north and Orly (ORY) to the south. If you arrive in Paris by air, public transport will get you quickly and cost-efficient into central Paris.
- Power outlets: Electrical outlets in France usually deliver power at 220-240V. Thus, plugging classical American 110V hairdryer to a French socket may result in ruining the device or worse, starting a fire.
Need Visa? Requirements for Attending a conference in Paris
In order to travel to France, you are required to have a valid passport. In addition, nationals from some countries may require a visa. For information on whether you require a visa, and the corresponding process, visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/en/coming-to-france/
Here are some additional tips for your travel planning:
- Schengen Visa: If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you may need a Schengen visa to attend a conference in Paris. France is part of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel among member states for up to 90 days. Remember to double-check the specific visa requirements based on your nationality and individual circumstances before making travel arrangements. Failure to obtain the necessary visa may result in being denied entry to France for the conference.
- Conference Invitation: To apply for a visa, you may need a formal invitation letter from the conference organisers confirming your participation. Make sure to request this letter well in advance to allow for processing time.
- Visa Processing Time: Visa processing times can vary, so it's advisable to apply for your Schengen visa at least 2-3 months before the conference date to allow for any delays in processing.
Safe travels and enjoy your conference in Paris!
